Personal Care Services

The ParaQuad Northern Region BranchNorthern Region Branch coordinates Personal Care Services to all people with a physical disability who require in-home support, including those who have an Attendant Care Package, those who receive other forms of funded services from the government or the National Disability Insurance Scheme, individuals with compensation from insurance agencies and those who pay for their personal care and or support needs themselves.

The Newcastle Region Service Supervisor liaises with individual clients and focuses on a “Person Centred Approach” to tailor the service specifically to their requirements. This enables the Field Supervisor to ensure ParaQuad Carers are trained and supported to provide tailored care for the specific individual needs of our Clients.
The Northern Region Branch area of coordination for these services is from the Central Coast including most areas to Tweed Heads.

Occupational Therapy

ParaQuad Occupational Therapy provides a person centered approach to assist people in maximising their independence and safety in everyday life.

Our ParaQuad Occupational Therapist can assist in the following areas:
• Wheelchairs, seating and pressure care equipment (e.g. mattresses, commode seats) – review and adjust existing setups, and if necessary, arrange trials and recommend new equipment setups
• Transfers (eg. bed, wheelchair, showering, car) – review current transfer techniques and make recommendations to maximise independence, safety and long term function
• Maximise function – suggestions new ways of doing things and provide equipment / assistive devices to help manage everyday activities easier and safer
• Provide education and advice – including upper limb overuse syndrome and ageing with a disability
• Home environment – assess, make recommendations and assist with home modifications and assistive technology
• Community reintegration – assist with accessing the community and returning to leisure and productive roles
• Advocate and support people with a disability.

Community Support

ParaQuad works with you in providing support for a healthy lifestyle by providing the following support:

• Information and linkages to local services and health professionals
• Advocacy
• Health information and Fact Sheets
• Music lessons, Come and Try Day’s and Workshops
• Volunteer program – Learn new skills whilst volunteering at ParaQuad while contributing to your community
• Scholarships
• Involvement in local events
• Social activities and social rolls

Newcastle branch provides Peers Support and co-ordinates Social Activities
ParaQuad has an active social group where anyone with a physical disability, family and friends meet up for various social activities each week. Activities include Lawn Bowls, Archery, Pool, fishing, Ten Pin Bowling, Lunch/Morning Tea at Cafés, Rolls About (e.g. a “roll” along the Newcastle Foreshore), Cooking Classes and ‘Come and Try days (e.g. hand cycling, yoga).
The cost of the activities varies depending on the activity and the number of participants ranging from Free to $30, but most activities are low cost. People do not need to be a member of ParaQuad to come along to this social group.

Peer Support

ParaQuad offer’s face-to-face support as part of the Peer Support Program which provides practical and emotional support for people who have damage or trauma to the spinal cord resulting from injury or disease. The program also supports their families and carers. There is no cost to being a participant in the program. Participants benefit from the opportunity to share their feelings and experiences with someone who has travelled a similar journey, particularly during times of change and adjustment. The program provides encouragement and practical support with information, resources and referrals to assist participants to achieve their goals.

Clinical Nurse Consultant

The Northern Region Branch has a fully qualified Clinical Nurse Consultant who has a strong background in mental health working with clients to provide knowledge and support to achieve optimal wellness.  Our clinical Nurse consultant provides families with the much needed social supports and the knowledge of identifying triggers and risks that will equip clients and their family to control and or minimise relapses.  With a wide knowledge base support in areas of pressure and wound care (acute or chronic), bladder and bowel support is provided with clients care needs tailored for a person centered approach.

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Support

The NSW NDIS is currently being trialed in three LGA’s within the Hunter region; Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland. The NDIS provides reasonable and necessary supports to people who have a permanent and significant disability. If you are a person with a disability and you meet the access requirements you can become a participant in the scheme.  ParaQuad NSW is an experienced registered provider to support you with National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

How can ParaQuad NSW assist me?
ParaQuad can assist you with your NDIS enquiries, provide information, advocacy and referral and support you in the planning process. The Newcastle NDIS Program Manager can meet with you to discuss the various types of funded supports which you may be eligible to receive.

Specialised Healthcare Products

BrightSky Australia is a one-stop-shop that provides national door to door delivery of specialist healthcare products in wound, continence, nutrition and other healthcare products.
BrightSky has a clinical nursing team which can help with advice on continence, wound care and aged care related issues.

Social and Rolls About Calendar

The Hunter Region has an active Social calendar with weekly “Rolls About” meetups. This has been created for the interest of people in the community who have a physical disability, friends and family to get together to try out new activities, share experiences and to meet new people. We are always welcoming new friends and you do not need to be receiving ParaQuad services to attend.
